This was our first big stop! We stayed at the Alamogordo KOA. We had about a 7 hr drive that day and arrived at the campsite around 630pm. We listened to the audiobook of James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl on the way and it was a hit! I told the kids that I used to read books like that on I-95 on the way to Florida. It was super hot and the kids did great for the whole car ride so they got rewarded by getting to jump into the pool immediately upon arrival!
We got up early and got an early start and had a big breakfast at the Pancake and Waffle Shop. We headed in to White Sands National Park fully covered in sunscreen and donning our Pop like wide brim hats with sand sleds in hand (plus wax to make them slide better). The highlight of the White Sands Park was the cool white lizards that blended right into the sand and that Orlando found a $100 bill in the sand.

In the after ion we went to Pistachioland where the have a huge pistachio farm and sell their famous pistachio ice cream! Of course we had to try it and it was delicious!
